hi jobsallover,

this is just my opinion, i got to your site, looked around a little bit and left. I had a headache after leaving your site.

I agree with Mauco about the color scheme, however your design is too crowded. Your links are ok for the most part, however, you are overdoing the ads on the page.

the first thing i saw when i arrived on your site was the ads, completely detracted from what your site is about. IMHO it looked like a warehouse for ads and made it hard to decipher what was actual website content and what wasn't.

you only need one ad banner on a page, they don't increase traffic to your site anyway, sure it can generate you money, if you can get people to stay on your site long enough to use them. But still having 2 or 3 different ad banners is overkill and will scare people away from your site, reducing proper conversion and flow through.

Hi Play$Bingo,

Welcome to the Elated Forums

I don't know much about Bingo but on first impressions your website looks very professional and appealing. I'm tempted to participate. I like the background image and your choice of colors.

I don't particularly like the 'Ladbroke' ad next to the 'Claim free bonuses & cash' signup form. I think it's a bit distracting and I really don't know what to do there.

Also the text on your homepage seems a bit too much, maybe you should consider reducing same.

The 'Leave a Reply' form at the bottom also seems out of place as it makes me think of a blog, which I don't think is your intention.

I would have suggested you place your RSS feed button on top in the header section rather than way down there in the footer section.

I checked your 'About Us' page and initially I got an 404 error message but I checked it again and it was visible. So you might want to look into the links.

All-in-All I like this site. Wish you the best.

Hope this helps?

Image Mapping Problems - Help Please http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/5389/#post22168 From: cherschu

I need to map a blog to a image correctly. I had someone create the image and it is up at www.samadhi-yoga-center.com. on the main page. The image is "Denise's Blog" I thought I mapped it correctly but obviously I have a syntax error. When I use my mouseover it will not link. I am using cpanel and a wordpress blog within Cpanel. Below is the code any help would be greatly appreciated. I am linking outside but I am wondering if this is incorrect

<map name="FPMap0">
<area shape="rect" coords="210, 358, 307, 383" href="http://www.samadhi-yoga-center.com/blog" >
</map>

<!--webbot bot="ImageMap" text="(462,252) (690,297) {Contact Us} {Ravie} 18 B #f7ffa2 CT 0 mailto:denise@samadhi-yoga-center.com" text="(1386,389) (1546,438) {Gallery} {Ravie} 18 B #f7ffa2 CT 0 vinyasa_gallery.htm" text="(375,439) (534,478) {Events} {Ravie} 18 B #f7ffa2 CT 0 events.htm" text="(210,358) (307,383) {Denise's Blog} {Ravie} 18 B #f7ffa2 CT 0 http://www.samadhi-yoga-center.com/blog

Hi JobsAllOver, welcome to Elated forums.

Your website is fine. It's simple and easy to navigate and I like the colorscheme too. Well done.

That said, I think you'd need a proper logo. Then I think I'd prefer if all your menu links where on one side giving space for your more content on each topic covered. Also, I'd think you should get a customized email address on your domain and not be using Gmail as your contact email. Also put some physical contact info on your website (phone, office address etc).

All-in-all, I'd say you did a good job on this attempt. I'm just focusing on the front-end here and not your coding.

I would love some input! http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/5373/#post22007 From: JobsAllOver

Hi everyone. I'm a new webmaster hoping to get a little input. I've been studying web design for a while but still consider myself a complete novice. I just started my site http://www.jobsallover.com. It's a site that gives people ideas on ways to supplement their income and make some extra money. The content is pretty weak currently, but I'm not worried about that I have huge improvements coming in that area.

What do you all think of the design? I'm hoping for some helpful input from a few experts, maybe some ideas on what could work better. I am thinking of eventually adding a top navigation bar when I get a little more content.
Check it out at http://www.jobsallover.com

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Ohh yea, that's cause i have learned a lot in the past week and changed a ton since I originally posted this.

The original top menu was mostly eliminated, I left the home choice and converted it to a button removing the text menu completely, then i removed the text header title converting it to image as well.

I still have a boatload to learn but i got to a good point where i am happy with the layout for the moment.

I do want to thank you for taking the time to look and help.

@JiniHammerer: Welcome to Elated!

Your site looks OK to me design-wise. The design fits the feel of your blog's topic.

I can't see any menu items on the top. Do you mean the ones in the right-hand sidebar? You can modify these in the CSS. The easiest approach is to open your site in Google Chrome, then right-click an element you want to style and choose Inspect Element. You can then see the markup for the element in the bottom pane, and work out which CSS classes apply. For example, in your right hand menu I can see that you'd select menu options in the CSS using something like:

Code:
--------------------
#sidebar .wdgtbox ul li { (styles here) }
--------------------

Hope that helps! If you need more technical CSS help then you'll be better off posting in our Authoring and Programming forum:

Cheers,
Matt

I am EXTREEMLY new and making websites, like, started friday, i am a putergeek and deturmined so i have managed to build a site of sorts.

I do graphic art as a hobbie and wanted a place to put my stuff that I controlled and decided this may be the way to go.

Now I am using a wordpress php front end and have a phpbb forums.

I used a template and created my own webgraphics for the front page, but there are certain things i know just are not right and i really cant sort out what to do about them.

For one I have menue items on the top, but they are basicly just text sitting on the graphics i wanted to make them more button like.

I guess i need to know where is a good place to start to figure out how to edit or modify style sheets of a page you have on the web.

My website is http://www.thegcp.com

Any ssuggestions help or feedback would be welcome.

@matt & TruthConquers: I think I can address your comments together. Yes, the site is ultra minimalist but I believe portfolio sites should always be neutral in style and instant in function. The individual portfolio pieces should be the only 'voice talking'.

Granted, this is not the most neutral and/or functional site but I think I'll develop a new site separately.

Cheers.

I have added a few more touches like the "seal" and made a unique background, also added some depth to the form and made a changes to the overall content frame, to stand out more.

I have also been playing with different themes, which I might implement dynamically each time a client comes to the site, to keep the site fresh.

Also playing around with different visually stimulating table designs.

In terms of ultra-minimalist, this site ranks high. Not a great fan of ultra-minimalist as I believe it can "short-change" ones abilities, none-less a well articulated minimalist portfolio site.

Rob, I think that looks much better. Nice, clean, and easy to use. Great work!

The only thing that strikes me as slightly odd is the lack of a page footer. I'm not sure it's essential, but it might help to round off the page. Even something as simple as a horizontal bar might work. Just a thought.

Hi Robert, your site's great! It's refreshingly easy to read and navigate and loads rather fast. I also noticed some strange behaviour Matt mentioned - atimes the entire menu on the left disappeared entirely (only to reappear after refreshing the page). Could it be that you were working on the site at the time I visited? Because I also saw another View/Download link which wasn't there initially!
Anyway from all what I saw, I liked. Wish you the best.

Hi Rob, and welcome to Elated. Thanks for posting your site. It looks good - nice, clean design. I like it!

I'm seeing strange behaviour with your top nav menu though. Sometimes nothing happens when clicking a link. Other times, the wrong page is displayed.

For example, sometimes when clicking the Projects link I see the "Browse Portfolio" page. At other times I see the 4 columns of white text.

Sometimes when clicking the Twitter link I see the 4 columns of text again. Sometimes when I click it, nothing happens.

There also seems to be some extraneous whitespace below the "coloured cards" photo on the Browse Portfolio page.

Hope that helps!

Best wishes,
Matt

@TruthConquers: Looks slick! One thing I'd say is that your content background image (bgmenu.png) is huge in terms of file size, which makes the page slow to load. I'd suggest replacing it with a jpeg at, say, 70% quality. You can use the CSS box-shadow properties to create the drop shadow if required.

Also I'd suggest redoing your menu buttons as a single CSS sprite to reduce load time and remove the flicker when first hovering over a menu item:

Your site looks good, just the "Bingo Article" section needs links to content.

It might be a good idea, to add some more drama to the header, the stars seem a bit miss placed... maybe some bingo related images in the "fun" feel which you through-out the site.

Hi thanks for the feedback.

I am working on adding more depth.

Made a few changes.

It validates as XHTML 1.0 strict which is positive.

I am also working on various background ideas to make the page stand out more and will take your advice on the colour scheme and more content.

Trying to keep it minimalist/clean.

Thanks once again.

Some feedback. http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/5293/#post21433 From: TruthConquers

Hi, just looking for some feedback.

It seems very buggy judging from compatibility sites, it seems to be working in the latest version of safari and firefox.

I just need to do some more testing and fine tweaking.

shinymanstudio.co.za

The main css file is only 8k and the html is 12.

So far it validates as strict XHTML 1.0 and I got some errors with my css and will clean that up.

The font is a bit thin, so I will be testing some others in the future.

Any constructive feedback is welcome.

-Peace.

Thanks everyone that feedback does help.

That ad was simply an image I uploaded to fill the space until I have something for that position (Google AdSense or something).

I may change the design so you may see different things at the test page.

Overall, you done a nice job. I like your colour scheme but I think you ought to change it in that box on the top right hand section (Scimitar Network) as I can hardly see what's written there. I also see a horizontal scrollbar when I check it from my iPhone & iPad but I don't see same when I check it on my laptop!
Hope that helps? Well done

Thanks for your feedback. Originally I was using the shade of blue in the sidebar (#3DA1A5) for the masthead as well. I found it using W3Schools' colour mixer (so I doubt it's web safe as such).

For the fluid page design, do you mean use percentages for widths instead of pixel values? If you notice, the menus start to wrap if the windows and/or screen size is insufficient.

Also, what font do you recommend for the footer links (below the mainContent div).

@Hunter100: Thanks for posting your site. I'm impressed by your design document - it's always good to see a thorough plan for a website's design and marketing

A few brief thoughts on http://brezerd.net/test/ :

I like the simplicity of the design, as well as the font choice. The dark green masthead also goes well with the orange in the site name and menu. However I'm not sure the blue/green sidebar colour fits in that well with the other 2 colours. I'd be tempted to try the masthead green (or a subtle variant thereof) instead. In a similar vein, I'd suggest using a link colour that blends with your colour scheme instead of the default blue.

Not sure how wide your page content is in the CSS, but I'm getting a horizontal scrollbar in my browser. A safe bet these days is no more than 960px wide. You could also use a fluid or responsive layout instead of a fixed layout, so that the site works well at different browser widths.

I also think the masthead needs some padding around its content (BREZERD.NET - Plan. Code. Deploy. Conquer.). Maybe 10px or so.

Hope that helps for now

Cheers,
Matt

Brezerd.net 3.0 http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/5282/#post21394 From: Hunter100

Hello all,

First time posting; however, have followed and loved Elated for months now.

Anyway, I'm redesigning my website's UI and this is what I am preparing to deploy:

http://brezerd.net/test/

Also, the current design document is here (for what it's worth):

http://brezerd.net/3/docs/BS-3-0-1.pdf

Any feedback on the new UI would be great and I do value your opinions as fellow webmasters. Constructive criticism is welcome.

Thank you,

I like the fresh look of this website, obviously it interacts with the viewer. It all looks like a well organised website, thats something i really like. However i got one little point here, i think you should make a background for more wider screens. Make sure the color is even at the end of the picture, than you can repeat another image with this even color in the body tag. But in the end, i like youre website!

Hi jenny22, I like your website. It looks fresh and professional. I like the colorcheme and all the page elements are well placed. However, I noticed that the links in the footer section seem not to be working! Also the hearder section seems a bit empty to me, as if its lacking something... But all in all, I think you've done a great job

Matt, I finally got around to trying the code to center and "cover" the entire background regardless of screen size. All I did was copy and paste the code into my template stylesheet and it work. Nice! Wish I did this months ago. You're a great resource and I appreciate your efforts. Great tip all.

Thanks to you too, Mauco. Next plan is to rid the popup so popup blockers don't annoy the users.

Re: Suggestions about Joomla Page http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/5207/#post20849 From: matt

Hi sara martin,

I took a quick look at your site just now. The overall design is fairly clean and unobtrusive, although the branding is quite generic. Generally speaking, though, the site does a reasonable job of selling the templates.

Here are some points I picked up on:

That "Need Help? Click to Chat!" popup appears in the top left hand corner by default, obscuring half of the site logo.

The logo has jagged edges around the letters. I suggest redoing the logo with smooth edges.

The page takes a long time to load, primarily due to the file sizes of the large number of template thumbnails on the page. Take a look at the Page Speed report to see how you could improve load time:

http://pagespeed.googlelabs.com/#url=http_3A_2F_2Fwww.templatemagician.com_2Fcategory_2FJoomla-templates&mobile=false

"Art & Photography Templates" in the right-hand Categories list wraps, which looks unprofessional. Same for "Interior & Furniture Templates".

Your page copy has a lot of grammar and style errors (written by a non-native English speaker?). Again, this looks unprofessional.

Hopefully that's enough to start with. Please let us know if you'd like more detailed feedback.

Cheers!
Matt

Hi Paul,

Nice website! Personally, think the background image isn't necessary as it distracts from the main page elements. I also got a pop-up blocked (IE). I feel you should also add a physical contact address on your contact page to let visitors know that you have a physical presence where you can be reached. All in all I think you done a good job.

Hope this helps. Wish you the best.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for posting your site. Del Mar looks like a beautiful spot.

Overall I think the site looks reasonably good, and it also does a good job of selling the products. The layout is fairly uncluttered and easy to navigate.

One oddity is the top-left logo sitting on a line all by itself, with the whitespace to the right of it. Maybe you could try a full-width banner image instead?

It's also slightly odd the way your page background image wraps. It would look nicer if it filled the whole window. I spotted a good trick recently that lets you stretch a background image to fill the whole browser window, whatever the window size:

http://css-tricks.com/perfect-full-page-background-image/

Also my Firefox blocked the pop-up windows on the photos. I see you're using a JavaScript onmousedown event on the links. Perhaps target="_blank" would work better?

Hope that helps! Let me know if you'd like any more detailed feedback.

Cheers,
Matt

As all designers know, sometimes we get to involved ourselves and need feedback to keep us on track. Please do so:

Hi desibird,

I like how it's clean and easily read, but (and I'm sure this is a personal preference) it's hard to tell what's The Most Important. Everything is given equal weight -- my eye is not drawn to anything in particular. I would suggest some size variation to emphasize what is key to the site. But, I do like it!
