@tinalouise50: I know next to nothing about Dreamweaver too I'm afraid. Sounds like you might need to change a "site root" (or similar) setting somewhere?

You could of course use an FTP app to download/upload files from/to your site, independently from Dreamweaver.

Please Help! Cannot connect to my remote live files on Dreamweaver! http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/5495/#post22861 From: tinalouise50

I created a new site in Dreamweaver and actually Matt helped me with some jquery problems I was having - thanks again Matt!

Now I have finished the site which was intended to replace an old one. My brother who has the hosting package for the site said that I needed to create a site within the root folder called /public_html/new so that once it was complete he could transfer the files into the live site /public_html and make my old site public_html/old.(In case we need anything in the future)

All went well and the new site is up. However I am now left with an empty public_html/new folder when I go to the remote button. I need to correct some things that I(and others......I swear it is a case of 'cannot see the wood for the trees' when you have been working on it for a while) did not see before. I cannot connect with the live site because it is in a folder that is not in my dreamweaver site. I cannot do anything because although I have corrected my pages in local view on Dreamweaver when I go to remote to upload I only have the empty folder. I have tried changing the name but it will not let me. What can I do? I have tried synchonizing but that does not work as the public_html/new is not recognized and now has no function? Please please help me I am going mad! The site is up and there are errors that need to be corrected!

By the way you can see it at

http://nailandrockett.com

My brother has no knowledge of Dreamweaver. I am soooo stuck and going crazy!

Any help would be soooooo much appreciated!!!

Many thanks

Tina

@blog99: I don't do web hosting consultancy I'm afraid! Your support really should be able to help you with this kind of thing, if they know what they're doing.

If you're running cPanel then this might help:

I spoke to support but they are unable to figure out the issue and are just providing me with tutorials, which I have gone thru all and double checked but cannot seem to find the issue.

Would it be possible to show you the c panel, if not I will just reconfigure the whole thing again and see if that works.

Thanks again for your help

@blog99: Hard to know without seeing your exact setup. Usually your FTP home directory contains your website folder (document root). If it doesn't then I suggest contacting your hosting provider's support. It sounds like your FTP home directory isn't being set correctly.

Hi,

Thanks for uploading such useful information.
I have installed Cyberduck today and followed the steps upto connecting to the server which I did successfully.

Now in your screenshot there should be a home directory displayed, in my case it is just a blank table.

When I log-in to C Panel> File Manager i can see the cgi directory but not on cyberduck window.

I was hoping to install wordpress after this step but I am stuck on this issue.

Any help would be useful. Thanks

Everything works well, except that if instead of entering a username and password, I just hit cancel, it takes me right into the directory I was trying to protect.

Any suggestions?

@richardstephens: Cyberduck stores passwords in your Mac OS X keychain, not in the app itself. Run /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access and look for your bookmark/server name in the Name column. Double-click it, then enable the "Show password" checkbox and type your new password. Click Save Changes.

Great tutorial. Thanks a lot.

I have a specific problem I can't find an answer to.

I imported all my sites (bookmarks) from Filezilla.

I have had to change my ftp password on one of my sites.

I can't see how to change the password on Cyberduck. The program opens the site. Will I be able to upload files?

I have tried deleting the site (bookmark). That works. When I try to do a new bookmark, it immediately reinstalls the bookmark I just deleted. ??????

thanks for any help on this.

I just noticed elated.com's RSS feeds URL is as http://feeds.elated.com/ElatedNewStuff , while the feed still uses Google's feedburner rss service. My question is how to configure this kind of customized RSS feed url and utilize feedburner's service at the same time? Or it just is feedburner's paid service? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

I think I got the path right this time, also spelled my filename right. /home/jacknet/Downloads/rusticdb.sql and I changed permissions to rwx for owner and user and ran:
mysql> source /home/jacknet/Downloads/rusticdb.sql; and got
ERROR 1046 (3D000): No database selected
ERROR 1046 (3D000): No database selected
ERROR 1046 (3D000): No database selected
ERROR 1046 (3D000): No database selected
The first line in the script file is "Create database 'xxxxxxxxx'"
So I'm still not sure it ran the .sql file or if it did why didn't it find a database when the first line says to create one?

mysql data transfer http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/5352/#post21850 From: jacknet

I downloaded a dump from my host site and the file looks like a source file with all the commands for setting up the database and all the data. however when I try to run it in Mysql to put it on my localhost I get this: mysql> source /home/downloads/rustic.sql;
ERROR:
Failed to open file '/home/downloads/rustic.sql', error: 2
Someone on another site suggested I drop the ; terminator but it didn't matter. I've tried various combinations to my home/download/file.sql and none work. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 as localhost.
Any suggestions please?
Thanks

Hello, Matt

I registered here only to express how grateful I am for you tutorial. I found it very helpful.
The official documentation was too difficult to read for me as an introduction, in other tutorials the processing of the directives wasn't explained clearly enough.
It was a pleasure to read your tutorial. Really well-written. I didn't have to read anything more than once

Really, really grateful and delighted to be finally able to use mod_rewrite,
Michael

I've been given the task of setting up a linux webserver, but the boss wants a simple to use interface to manage sites and user accounts from a web based interface. Its replacing an array of RaQ servers which are linux based, but have a management interface to setup sites, FTP access, enable PHP for different sites, do virtual sites, enable FP extensions and etc.

Is there an open source web management program I can run? I can explain more if this description doesn't make sense...

Also try using a different browser and see if that makes a difference.

How are you creating cookies? HTTP headers or JS?

Stuck on Cookies http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/5247/#post21140 From: ashishgaurav

It's my office site I'm creating. I've done it all. I checked it on my computer. When I log in, the site creates cookies for username and (loggedin=true). I go over to my personal page and it displays what it should display. Then I go over to Register Page and it says I'm logged in already, as expected. All works fine, cookies are alright.
Just when I go on to my Office and see the site on the PC's there, the problems arise. I log in, it shows me I'm logged in. Then I go over to my personal page, it shows me the Log in dialog box. Then when I go over to Register Page, it shows me I'm logged in. When I log out(since I know the log out page) the same problem occurs again.
I know it's something to do with cookies, but then also, I need help. Can someone provide me any help?
Sorry if I posted wrongly.

Re: Password Protecting Your Pages with htaccess http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/4673/#post21009 From: matt

@banafsajy: You can't really. The browser stores the credentials until it's closed:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_access_authentication#Disadvantages

If you need to support timeouts and logouts then the best bet is to use server-side code (PHP, ASP etc) with sessions. This also gives you more security since the credentials aren't sent by the browser with every request - only the session ID is sent.

Cheers,
Matt

hi, how do you get users to logout from the protected page once they are done viewing the content?

Once I've successfully entered the protected page using this method and I close the window, the next time I visit the protected page it doesn't ask me for a password anymore.

So question is, how secure is this?

Re: Understanding Permissions http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/4605/#post20820 From: matt

@sbusinesshelper: You need to set execute permission on a folder in order to be able to read the folder's contents. Depending on your web server setup this might be 755 or 744.

You can set the file(s) within the folder to 644.

You pretty much always want to keep read/write permissions for the owner on files, and read/write/execute permissions for the owner on folders.

Re: Understanding Permissions http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/4605/#post20813 From: sbusinesshelper

As all the above comments; great job, simple & concise. HOWEVER, I was hoping to better understand the purpose of the permissions/attributes. Probably best for me to explain my issue...

EXAMPLE: I found your post after Googling: ftp "file attributes" for web folders.

MY PROBLEM: I wish to make a web folder available to all my clients ONLY for the purpose of them being able to download a zipped file (bundle of AntiVirus fixes).

How would you go about this? Is it not the correct use of folder permissions?

WHAT I'VE TRIED:
I've set the folder "/AV" to 444 i.e.'Read permission only' for Owner, Group and Public. Yet, I am unable to view the folder at my domain now?! How much do I need to set in order for you and other to be able to goto mywebsite.com/AV and view&download the zip file.

Thank in anticipation of your reply.

Re: Lost when adding multiple pictures. http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/5182/#post20656 From: matt

@danktankk: No problem. Personally I would knock together a PHP script to both create the thumbnails and churn out the HTML. But the Photoshop approach would at least do the thumbnails for you if you're not familiar with PHP coding.

Another approach would be to use a gallery or photo management app to generate your thumbnails and pages. You could then copy and paste the HTML from the auto-generated page into your own page.

On the Mac you can do it with iWeb. Or a good cross-platform solution is jAlbum:

Hope that helps!

Hi,

This post is wonderful. I usually do not read whole post/ Tutorial's / HowTo's on blogs however the preciseness and simplicity of the post made me read the whole post and actually understand the topic quite well (now just need to practically do it).

I wasn't going to sign up but the quality of the posts basically the whole site compelled me to sign up.

Thanks for making Internet better with your presence.

Wonderful stuff

Thank you for the reply. I was really hoping there was a way to add hundreds of images without doing them 1 the time. I am currently looking for ways to do just that. Since I am using dreamweaver to design the website, I am going to see if there's a way to use that to do what I'm trying to accomplish.

I am going to stick around this website and read up as much as I can and learn from the people here kind enough to offer their expertise. Thanks again, I'll report back when I figured out a way to get it done without doing it 1 at a time.

Re: Lost when adding multiple pictures. http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/5182/#post20645 From: matt

@danktankk: You'll need to create thumbnails of the images somehow first. You can either create a batch action in Photoshop (or another editor) to do it, or get hold of some thumbnailing software. Another option is to use a server-side script (PHP, ASP etc) to generate the thumbnails, either as a one-off batch or on the fly.

Then it's just a case of adding an img tag to your page for each thumbnail, and wrapping the img tag in a link that points to the full-size image.

Cheers,
Matt

Lost when adding multiple pictures. http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/5182/#post20640 From: danktankk

Forgive me and please place this post in its appropriate area if I posted this in the wrong place.

I am trying my best to add several hundred pictures to a template I downloaded for free. This is been very frustrating to sat the least. Is there any way to add them to one of the pages on my website?

this is the code where I want to add the images as thumbnails that would link to the images in a folder on the server:

Code:
--------------------
<div id="logo">
<a href="#"><center>PlanetDankk</center></a>
<h2><a href="#"><small><center>•·.·´¯`·.·•––•(-•Dænkk•-)•––•·.·´¯`·.·•</center></small></a></h2>
</div>
<div id="buttons">
<a href="index.html" class="but_home" title=""></a><div class="but_razd"></div>
<a href="Composition.html" class="but" title="">Compositions</a>
<div class="but_razd"></div>
<a href="gallery.html" class="but" title="">Gallery</a><div class="but_razd"></div>
<a href="Dawson.html" class="but" title="">Dawson-ville</a>
<div class="but_razd"></div>
<a href="contact_us.html" class="but" title="">Contact us</a>
</div>
</div>
<!-- header ends -->
<!-- content begins -->
<div class="cont_top"></div>
<div id="content">
<div style="height:10px"></div>

<div style="height:550px"></div>

<div style=" height:21px; padding-left: 20px;">
<a class="gal_num" href="#">1</a>
<a class="gal_num" href="#">2</a>
<a class="gal_num" href="#">3</a>
</div>
</div>
<div class="cont_bot"></div>

<!-- content ends -->
--------------------

i am also hosting this site on my own server 2008 R2 machine mainly just for family to have access to the pictures. I am one lost dude.

Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure that cyberduck supports ssh tunnelling, but you could try this: http://www.trembl.org/codec/date/2011/02/

Hello,
I am trying to access my works Intranet through Cyberduck and I am not sure exactly how to do this.
I will explain how I do it on Putty, through the IBM side of my Mac and maybe you can help me. Thanks.
In Putty .. I go to Sessions (at the top left scroll bar) I enter in the Host Name Field (the host computer) then under Port I enter the port number.
Then I go to Connection SSH - Tunnels (at the bottom left scroll bar). In the Source Port Field I enter the Port I am using.
In the Destination field I enter another name .com:80.
This lets me log into my works intranet and use the tools their I need to.
Thanks, in advance.
7slocal.

@rawatrk1: I don't know anything about iPower's server setup. I think you'll need to speak to them about how best to do your redirects.

You can also use mod_rewrite to do redirects. You might find this article helpful:

Urgent Help Needed: Managing Multiple WP Blogs http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/5173/#post20563 From: rawatrk1

I am new to hosting and arranging multiple TLD wordpress blogs in File Manager (organizing my web space) in ipower (my webhost). I think I have done it incorrectly from the start and that is why now it has become for me to understand exactly how to organize multiple TLD extn. blogs. I got support from ipower but either they did not understand my query or I couldn’t understand their answer because lack of knowledge of hosting, arranging and maintaining multiple Wordpress Blogs and lack of other technical details about File Manager+root directory+control panels.

LET ME START FROM THE BEGINNING TO BETTER UNDERSTAND

I have two TLD domains
abcd.com Parked site
12345.com live wordpress blog

PS: Actual website hidden because I think we can not state website URL here

When I first started with ipower.com that was with an affiliate program with Affiliate Junktion program and they installed my affiliate site with ipower (providing web space and domain abcd.com as stated above, from ipower against charges collected from me and that time I even don’t know much about File Manager/Control Panels and organizing Folders/Directories/Files for multiple wordpress blogs or sites for my future requirement. Domain booked was abcd.com which is at present parked with ipower (because affiliate site Affiliate Junktion is closed) and this domain is associated with the root directory as my 1st domain hosted with ipower.

My 2nd website which is wordpress blog (12345.com as mentioned above) and which is live and installed by me but even for this also, I havn’t prebuilt my separate folder for this blog and I installed it as it is with giving any 2nd thought

Now below is my File/Folder structure in FILE MANAGER in ipower for both 12345.com (parked site) and abcd.com (live wordpress blog).

Displaying under ROOT folder
abcd.com - redirect (actual this is shown. Parked site)
12345.com - redirect (actual this is shown. Live wp blog)
Public_html
Stats

1. In Folder abcd.com following showing
blank.html
index.html (here preview showing)

2. In folder 12345.com (live wordpress blog) following showing – DNS domain extn.
blank.html
index.html (here preview now showing)
PS:- This domain is booked with namecheap and DNS Changed for ipower webhost

3. Inside public_html following showing
cgi-bin - folder
wp-admin - folder
wp-content - folder
wp-includes - folder
.htaccess
12345.com_sitemap.x….
12345.com_sitemap.x…
index.php
license.txt
readme.html
wp-activate.php
wp-app.php
wp-atom.php
wp-blog-header-php
wp-cron.php
wp-login.php
wp-register.php
wp-rdf.php
wp-mail.php
wp-pass.php
wp-load.php
wp-links-opml.php
wp-feed.php
wp-rss.php
wp-rss2.php
wp-settings.php
wp signup
wp-trackback.php
xmlrpc.php
AND OTHER FILES

In Domain Central – Pointers are set as following
12345.com Home Directory (wordpress blog – live) DNS extn. domain
abcd.com Parked site (parked site – live)

In Domain Central there are only 4 Pointers
- Home Directory /public.html/
- sub Directory
- URL
- Parked

Now want to Know

I have stated the all the detail and given what showing in File Manager for my two domains i.e. 2 websites (1 static parked page and other wpb log live)

01. Why abcd.com and 12345.com are showing REDIRECTED

02. Please refer above Point 2 – why Preview not showing where my parked site preview is showing

03. If you see above please point your expert eyes on the structure and see whether folders/Directories/Files in order for my wordpress blog (12345.com) or should I arrange that in separate folder for this blog so that I can host other TLD blogs in a systematic order of all blogs. If I have to arrange in separate Folder then how to do it and where to make the folder, how to move, what to move and where to move. Then where to point the domain from the 4 options as given above.

04. I am also thinking to install wordpress for my 2nd domain (abcd.com) also which is at present parked and is my 1st domain with ipower, associated with root directory. Please let me know where in which place should I make the folder for this wpb log and where to point the domain (abcd.com)

I know it is a big task for everyone to reply but please help as I am jobless because of overage and trying for my livelihood with online wordpress niche websites.

Hope, whatever I stated is complete and in order for you to better understand.

Thanks and looking forward for best step by step instructions.

Re: mod_rewrite Tutorial for Absolute Beginners http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/4848/#post20445 From: matt

@webperfection: Sounds like more of an issue with your virtual server. If your apache can't address the path of the site you want to redirect to then there's not much it can do (apart from a 301/302 redirect).
