In the latest issue of our newsletter the Elated Extra ( http://www.elated.com/newsletter/ ), I pledge to not use gradients in my design work for a whole month. Can I do it?

Are you a gradient lover, or are you sick of the sight of them? Let us know your thoughts here!

Gradients are (and have been) the natural progression to better cosmetic appeal - so no need to shy away from them!

Gradients give images a more natural, 3-d like appearance - it makes things a bit more realistic, in an otherwise flat world.

Your addiction to gradients should be embraced....

It's a bit like watching High Definition TV, and wanting to go back to "normal" TV - no way!

So if your drug is gradients, I say endulge!

Quick report: I already failed in my quest not to use gradients, although it was a situation where I was updating something I'd done previously!

@GMCDesign. That's one way of looking at it! The world is flat? Someone tell Mt Everest!

The discussion was in regards to gradients - so my comment about being "flat" was in regards to "on your computer screen", and how gradients add to the dimension, or "3-Dness" in my opinion...

Most computer screens I've seen are flat

@GMCDesign: Very true

@simon: So let's just say gradients are becoming passé, and will follow the path of spinning globes and gigantic RSS icons to web design oblivion. What's the next big design trend going to be?

@GMCDesign: I can see a case of 3-d-ness on buttons, but otherwise, why do we need dimension and real-world imitation?

@Matt No idea what the next trend will be, but you might as well just watch Apple's Lion, since everyone will just copy that. With that in mind I'll say "flatter", "squarer", with a whole new raft of non-standard scrollbar implementations.

This is quite a good response to the whole "real-world" imitation design trend (of which gradients are a part):
