I'm trying to figure out how to find out which keywords are converting to sales using Google analytics. I already use the Google tracking code, but can't for the life of me learn how to see which keywords produce sales. Any ideas are appreciated!

Hi Paul,

You first need to set up your site as an E-commerce site in Analytics (Analytics Settings page > Edit a profile > Click the top right Edit link > Check "Yes, an E-commerce Site").

Then you can add some JavaScript to your "payment successful" page to track the transaction. More info at:

http://code.google.com/apis/analytics/docs/tracking/gaTrackingEcommerce.html

Exactly how you do this depends on the cart/payment system you are using.

You'll then see an Ecommerce item in the left hand menu in the reports. Click this, then click Keywords under Traffic Sources to see which keywords generate the most revenue.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Matt -- this was very useful, though now I know why I haven't done it yet. Somewhat tricky.

Do you do this work?

@pcstokes: Yes, it's a bit fiddly to set up, but it works well once it's in place.

I don't specialise in analytics, no. Just used it on a few e-commerce sites ( e.g. http://www.pagekits.com/ ).

Cheers,
Matt
