Hi Matt,

Very impressive list you gave here, thanks for sharing. I like Notepad2. But I'm wondering what's the difference between between Notepad2 and Notepad++ ?

I think Nedit is a pretty good editor for the Unix world, especially for those coming from the Windows world. The macro capability is pretty handy too.

@mauco: I haven't used Notepad2 myself but I think they are pretty similar, except that Notepad++ doesn't support multiple documents/tabs I believe?

@whytea: NEdit does look pretty good - are there Mac and/or Windows ports, do you know?

Nice list.

I moved to Aptana from Dreamweaver a few years ago to avoid upgrade costs. Aptana was excellent, *until* they inexplicably dropped PHP support. I searched for a new tool, and I've now been a happy Netbeans developer for over 9 months. Very similar in appearance to Aptana, but not based on Eclipse - so it's very stable and fast.

The only drawback for Netbeans (and also Aptana) is that neither has a Word Wrap function for code. Never quite worked out the logic on that decision...

Pete.

Matt,

I don't use a Mac, but I have seen Mac port of Nedit on the Web. Since Mac OS X is Unix based, there is no reason why it can be recompiled for the Mac. Unfortunately there is no native port for Windows.

Since we are talking about editors, I'd like to mention two other Windows editors:

1) Tse Pro
- shareware from Semware (http://www.semware.com)
- it existed since the Dos days and the interface hasn't
changed much
- incredibly flexible
- the macro is extremely powerful, something you don't
find in most of the Windows editors

2) R J TextEd (http://www.rj-texted.se/)
- a nice free modern editor, kind of like PsPad
- loads of features

Thanks for the additional suggestions guys - will check them out!

@kpdirection: I quite like Netbeans too, but left it out of the list because I wanted to concentrate more on simple editors than full IDEs.

BTW you can turn on word wrap in Aptana but the option is ridiculously well hidden. In the Preferences dialog click Aptana, then Editors, then Advanced, then "Enable word wrap (requires editor restart)".

You left out Quanta+, the best Linux editor I can find. Unfortunately it only runs on KDE3. Also you left out bluefish and Amaya.
