I just came across it:

http://krita.org/

Many tout it as being nicer than Gimp, and a closer challenger to Photoshop. I think it even supports CMYK properly. Looks pretty good from the screenshots...

Interesting. We'll see. There's no 10.6 build for MacOS, sadly, so I can't try it. Have you downloaded it?

Interface-wise, it still seems to suffer from that slightly uninspired utilitarianism that a lot of open source/Windows software has, but if it's free, and works, then that's acceptable I suppose.

BTW, does it require X11 to run under MacOS? They say "native", which suggests not, but I'm very out of touch with this stuff...

I confess I couldn't get it to install on the Mac either, but I did try it on Ubuntu.

It's OK - I'd say a bit nicer to use than Gimp, and it has a decent feature set (paths, levels, curves, editable text, decent range of filters, etc).

However the interface is still pretty clunky compared to Photoshop. And try as I might, I couldn't get it to do something as simple as paint/fill with anything but black! (The help was, inevitably, no help at all.)

It's also slow, and crashed on me a couple of times (though to its credit, it recovered the document after each crash, which is more than Photoshop does).

Not the most glowing review then. It has promise though...
