As a "newby" to web development, I may sound less than logical, so I hope you will bare with me. I had great success setting up my office computer as a server using XAMPP with MySQL to use PHP as a development tool. I also wanted to start using ASP, so I got another machine. When trying to setup IIS, I can open the IIS feature, but I cannot get my system to act as a localhost. I get a variety of errors when I attempt to view pages on localhost. If no one can assist on this issue, I will not feel slighted, but any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Joe, welcome to the forums.

It sounds like your IIS might not be set up properly. What error messages are you seeing in your browser?

Cheers,
Matt

Hi Joe,
To start with, XAMPP is not a good idea to call as server.. too much of loop holes. I'd insist you take time in actually installing MySql, Php. phpmyadmin to maintain db's as a web. Its more secure to use them individually than packages like xampp/mamp/wamp.

Coming to your IIS, i'd suggest you post the errors which then would be a cake walk for you to obtain answers...

With Apache (WAMP) and IIS on the same machine you will have to change the listening port of one or the other, they both cannot exist on the default of port 80.

Apache is easiest to change. Locate httpd.conf in the WAMP folders
(wamp\bin\apache\apache [ver no]\conf\)
and edit the entry for Listen 80

Set it to 8080 or 8888.

restart Wamp anf use http://localhost:8080 to view the site.

NOTE: if you are a Skype user, open Skype and use;

Tools -> Options... -> Advanced -> Connection -> and Uncheck "Use Port 80 .... as alternative for incoming ..."

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the info. It was very helpful. I think I need to start over from the beginning (i.e. reinstalling the associated software, etc.). I am very grateful to you and the other guys who have tried to assist. Such helpful people are what makes forums like this worthwhile.

Thanks again,
