I've never used Filezilla before and I am curious about the process of transferring files that are a lot larger when on my hard drive side and then they appear a lot smaller on the remote site (on the right side of Filezilla).

Am I doing something wrong? Or are the files supposed to be smaller than the original when uploaded?

I'm one of the last people on the earth with dial-up and it can be very discouraging waiting hours for an upload and finding the pictures uploaded online only show about one/fifth of the picture before showing 'done'.

Any help will certainly be appreciated, thanks.

Hi Phillip, and welcome to the forums!

Generally the files on the remote server should be the same size as the ones on your computer. There might be a few bytes' difference due to operating system differences, but not much.

How big are the files? It may be that your dialup link simply can't cope with the large files and is timing out or dropping out halfway through the upload process.

Does the upload process appear to finish successfully, or do you get any timeout errors in FileZilla?

Make sure you upload the files one at a time to avoid overloading your link. Also, if you're uploading images, make sure you upload them in binary mode, not text mode.

Can you post some links to some of your uploaded images? It might help me diagnose the problem.

Cheers,
Matt

Thank you Matt! I resolved my uploading issues with FileZilla by putting my web pages on a jump drive and visiting a friend with dsl. In ten minutes my site was up and running.

Thank you for your tips on working with dialup and FileZilla in the future. When I use dialup again, I will upload one file at a time and for pics I'll use binary.

Again, thank you for sharing.

No problem Phillip! From what you're saying, it does sound like an issue with dialup. I find I have to be gentle with dialup links, and not try to upload too much at once!

Happy Thanksgiving
Matt
