Hi folks

Do you feel that these days, providing that a site menu is intuitive and shows where you are in relation to the rest of the site, preferably with some sort of highlighter, that a bread crumb trail is no longer expected or needed?

Many thanks

Hi Tony,

I do still use them, where I think it's useful. I agree that these days it should be obvious where you are from well designed menus etc, but sometimes it's useful to have an idea where you are in the overall structure of the site. This is especially true of more complex sites.

Also, I did a site recently that uses a lot of Ajax calls to mine for data in the site, and we found that because there weren't that many page refreshes, people were getting a bit lost. We implemented breadcrumbs for this site to give people and idea about where they were. What's interesting is that the breadcrumbs no longer represented an actual hierarchy of pages (which don't actually exist), but instead represented more of an idea of where the user was in the flow of information, allowing them to step back through stacked searches.

Did the same job though!

Simon
