I think carrier pigeon would be faster than my Virgin 50mb cable service, which is rough as old boots. When it's fast, it's very fast, but it's deeply inconsistent and can be dog slow. I suspect half of it's the hardware.

@Johno: Fantastic! Yes it will be a long time before ADSL beats a pigeon - or a truck full of hard drives for that matter. Unless we're talking latency, of course...

@simon: If it's inconsistent then it sounds like Virgin's network might be oversubscribed. Once those file sharers get on it then the whole thing grinds to a halt!
