Is this "springy" sites stuff something new to IE5+ and NS6+? I notice your "Your Site: Judge & Jury" page of Elated Forums has fallen victim and does not spring back to fit on the page.

I've had the same problem with some of my pages and have tried to fix them by setting table widths in pixels instead of percents. It seems to work. Is that the best solution?

Hi Bob,

Do you mean that the table is pushed out a bit on the forums sometimes?

It's just that there are titles that are pushing it out that are urls. Becaus ethey don't linebreak the tables will always be pushed out.

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Simon,

It's probably just me drawing wrong conclusions from too little info. I first encountered the term "springy sites" at the Macromedia site. Then when I switched to NS6.1, I noticed that sites were loading differently. Your site, for example, starts with the darker left column occupying 3/4 of the page. It springs back to its proper width as other elements load. As I recall it, this was not the case when I was using NS4.7 or earlier. At the same time I began to notice some of my pages, as well as pages at other sites, continuing well off the screen to the right.

Is this real, or am I just eating too many mushrooms on my pizza?

Bob,

I think in terms of Macromedia, what they are talking about is the ability to use Dreamweaver to create one "flexible" (or springy) cell in a layout table. In that way, that portion of your page design will expand/contract to fit the width and resolution of the viewer's screen. You can get more "screen real estate" that way, but my experience has been that it's hard to control. With CSS people tend to refer to it as "liquid," but IMO, it doesn't work the same in any two browsers.

Netscape 4 had a way of drawing an entire page, doing someting internal to itself, and then re-drawing it quickly--very annoying!! I don't think Nescape 6 does that.

I wonder if that's what you are thinking of. In my version of IE5, Elated stays the same size. The darker left stripe occupies a couple of inches to the left, the main content extends to slightly to the right of center. (I have a big monitor.) But it all stays put.

I hope that sheds a little bit of light!!

Thanks, Anne. Actually that sheds a lot of light. Also... thank you also for your new opening page. I still choke up at all the evidence I've seen in the past few weeks of the goodness and decency of the human spirit. It helps keep a perspective on those few subhumans who consider mass murder a political tool.

Matt & Simon, thank you again for these forums. What a great opportunity to learn and share!

LOL. Pixel Stationery, we aim to please! Actually, that site is now loading like a large, steaming pile of fertilizer in IE4, and I can't figure out why!! Webdancer warned me about DHTML, but would I listen? Noooo!

There is a very oddball and outside chance that I may be going to NYC to do some geek-work for the Red Cross there. I have one very strange specialty, and they may have need of it. Privately, I'm very thankful that I live near enought that I can answer duty's call by good old Amtrak. Publically, if I go, I will post a journal daily on my website. And I'll stop by here and let everybody know where I am.

Well, if it is any consolation to you, the site loads fine in NS6.

I'm not sure if I envy you going to NYC right now or not. We have several good friends there that I would love to see: communication with them has been pretty ragged lately. On the other hand, I'm not sure I could take the reality. The media pics are bad enough.

Do keep us posted. I'd really like to hear about your experiences.

Bob
