My first try at website... it's my home page with both a site for a book I wrote and a site for my primary business. I'd appreciate anyone's suggestions cause there's no question I'm an amateur and I'd like sites to look less amateurish.

Hi there, welcome to the Forums!

I take it you're talking about your Sprague Agency site:

http://www.sprague2.com

I'll see if I can offer you some tips on making your site look more professional.

1) Graphics. Try to match the background of the images with your page background. Get a program such as Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro and change the black background of the globe on the front page to match your blue. Also, consider using a more "neutral" background such as plain black or white, because this will make it easier to find graphics that match. You'll also notice on the Web that most professional sites tend to have a plain, non-patterned background.

2) Alignment. Your images are scattered randomly over the page - try to bring them more into alignment; this will add an air of professionalism. You can use tables to help keep your page elements aligned.

3) Broken images - your mailto: image isn't there, which results in that ugly broken image symbol!

4) Mystery navigation - make your navigation buttons self-explanatory. That webmail button at the bottom next to the counter could do with some text next to it such as "click for webmail".

5) Java navigation - that Java applet you're using for the link to your book is overkill. Just use a normal graphic button - you can use JavaScript instead of Java to achieve a rollover effect if desired.

Hope that helps. If you need any more feedback please let me know!

Best wishes,
Matt
