I have run into a strange problem with Save for web. On my computer I have created a jpg 8bit/72 dpi to design a website layout on. I save for web using 100% jpg quality.

Next step is I load the image into dreamweaver, using the same color as the background I used on the image as the page background color.

Everything looks fine and dandy on my computer. But then I open it up on a few others here at work and the image I saved is extremely low quality, the gradient is all choppy. As well the background of the image does not match the background color of the website. Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank-you

Hi there,

It sounds like the other screens you're looking at the jpg on aren't displaying enough colours to render the gradients effectively. Modern monitors display millions of colours, but older ones may only display thousands.

That said, where gradients don't have a lot of difference in the colours (eg a dark grey to black gradient) or have to stretch over a long distance (like the background of a web page for instance), even modern monitors will struggle a little.

Can we see the image, please, so we can know for sure?

Cheers,

Simon

I have to say, that looks okay to me. The gradient is smooth on my screen.

Thanks Simon,

I think it has to do with the monitors being 16 bit color.

Is the solution only choosing a web color in photoshop to match the background? Is there a way I can match the background to the image background besides using this solution?

I think you might be right. There's not a lot you can do about it except:

1) Avoid gradients

2) Decide that since every gradient will look lousy on these screens, you might as well go for it, and cater for people with better screens!
