Hi, I am very new to Photoshop & have been trying to follow the tutorial on the help software. I am stuck at the first hurdle! When they suggest that you add a layer mask, you can view just the section that is selected using the elipse tool. However when I do it it is the reverse and I can only view the image other than the elipse. What is wrong?

Thanks

Hi Marge,

I think I know what's happening here. Basically you can "paint" onto layer masks using black, white or grey to add transparacy to the mask.

A fully white mask is completely opaque, and a fully black one is transparent. I'm guessing that your mask is mostly black with a white ellipse.

If you make sure the mask is selected in the layers palette you can rectify this by going to the Image menu and doing Adjustments> Invert. This will make the black areas white and vice versa. You should now be seeing the image "through" the ellipse.

Hope that helps,

Simon
