Hi All

I'm working with the Aperture page kit and have come across a problem. The psds were created in photoshop v4 and have no editable text layer. This means I have to create new ones from scratch... which isn't a problem.

My problem is I don't know what effect has been applied to the text to make it appear sharp/crsip when displayed against the solid background of the web page.

If you look at the gifs for this page kit they all have a darker edge like an outline, although this doesn't show in the psd. If I create a new one, export it, then display on a page the edges of the characters aren't clean. They're slightly jagged with streaks of white. Kinda like if I'd done a bad job of cutting coloured text out of a white piece of paper then stuck it on a dark background.

So... How can I make the page header text images appear clean and what effect has been applied to the menu gifs, on & off, to make them appear the way they do?

Long post I know... Sorry

Regards

anti-aliasing being on is what adds the lighter outline around the edge.
there is a checkbox on the properties dialog box

Hey thanks Chris...

That kinda works. If I switch anti-alias off and apply either a sharpen effect or a thin outer bevel, using fireworks, I'm almost there.

Still not quite though... The corners of all my letters are still jagged and the orig ones appear perfectly rounded.

Any further hints?

don't use .gif

Seriously though;

take a look at the resolution of the image for a start, 72 pixels/inch would be the minimum to use

try different anti-alias setting (depending on what ver of PS you are using)

also make sure that "lossy" is at 0 on the "Save for web" dialog.

I don't use PS enough to be of much help, I have a friend who does graphics, so Matt or Simon would be able to more with specifics.

Hi Juss,

Looking at the 'Kit, I don't think there actually is this dark outline you're seeing, which suggests it's a quirk of your monitor rather than anything that's really there. As you say, the PSD file doesn't have any dark edges, and that's the file we used to make the menu items.

If you do like this and want to accentuate the effect, you could try messing around with the blending options in photoshop and single-pixel drop shadows?
