Recently I visited Macromedia Flash seminar, purachased the product and got excited about it. Originally being a Photoshop graphic designer I now start to discover the world of vector animations. But after I created my first animation and wanted to put it on my web site I realized that it can be wieved only by folks who have Flash Player. Is there any way how to get rid of this? Can I transform my artwork to GIF format or is there any other option?

Hi marco,

Flash is a great technology and it's pretty much a standard now, but there are these issues you mention.

You can export an aniumated gif from flash rather than the .swf file, but these will be way big for download.

The other option is to send them to a different page by "sniffing" for the plugin using dreamweaver's "check plugin" feature or just writing one yourself. Then you can send an enabled browser to the Flash and a non-flash one to a static page.

Lastly, you can give the user a physical choice on the way in to go for either flash or non-flash versions of the site - this is the foolproof way!

Hi Marco
I've just returned from a seminar and here's some interesting statistics (from www.statmarket.com) 91.2% of internet users have the Flash player installed and 35 out of the top 50 websites use Flash on there websites.
I think there is a lesson in this somewhere.

That's pretty encouraging isn't it. I'm still amazed that it doesn't come as part of the standard IE installation though...
