HI jbarano!
I just joined the forum.
I'm not a Photoshop expert, but this is what I do.
First zoom to 100% (or more) to have a good pixel level view.
(This will allow you to see if pixels were not erased or if areas of the part of the image you want to keep have accidentaly been erased. You can always use undo.)
Select the "magic erasor" tool. (A message in the status bar should tell you that you're going to erase to transparancy.)
Then select the magic erasor's options.
Start off with a tolerance of 20 or 32, Set Opacity to 100%. Check "Use All Layers" (if it's layered), "Anti-aliased" and "Contiguous".
If large areas were not erased to transparancy, first undo and try with a higher tolerance.
If parts of the image you want to keep have been erased to transparancy, undo and try with a lower tolerance.
If only isolated pixels are left, you can finish the job with the background and/or normal erasor.

I think you're looking for SELECT/INVERSE

Select the part you want to keep, with the wand,
or whatever, then click SELECT and INVERSE
That'll select everything other than what you want
to keep, then just hit the Delete key.
