This is a question for Matt or any other sophisticated Photoshop user. What is your experience with precise selectioning in Photoshop. I mean, I read all the book by Deke McCleland called Photoshop 4 Bible and it was amazing - that guy selected girls hair. But it was rather difficult to remember, the procedure has about 15 steps. I use Photoshop 5.5 now. Are there any enhancements in this area that apply to the newest upgrade only?

Hi marco,

One good tool added in Photoshop 5 is the magnetic lasso tool. This allows you to select irregular shapes much more quickly than the regular tool, by "guessing" the outline of the shape as you move the mouse along.

To activate, hold the mouse button over the Lasso tool (second one down on the left) until the pop-up appears, then select the icon with the magnet, and click/drag around the outline of your image as normal.

Anyone else have some precision selectioning tips?

5.5 has an "EXTRACT" tool I think in the "IMAGE" submenu.
It's actually advertised as being able to refine selections right
down to strands of hair. If you're lucky and have 2 strongly
contrasting colors, it's really easy, but overall it works
well.
