Just before christmas I started playing around with web page design/production and have come across a bit of a problem with the way my page looks on different screen sizes. Also with different screen settings on the computer. I myself like to have small icons and set the screen for that which throws out my pages look. Can anyone give me any advice on presenting my page so it is consistant on all screens.

Your page looks pretty good to me. I'm using a Mac with a 17 inch monitor.

To have your over all content expand-contract on different sized monitor screens, try putting your page contents inside a table. Set the table attributes to percent or automatic. This should do the trick.

When it comes to screen resolution, I use 832X624 always. Most people I find are set in the 800X600 range.

Designing for the majority is a safe way to go. There will always be someone who's browser is out dated or computer is not compatable.

Hope this helps.

HI,

Screen size can be very important in developing a site that will be
compatible with every one that views that site. As I am sure you
know not every one has the same resolution or same size monitor. I
myself prefer 1024 on my monitor where as a lot of folks are rather
happy with 640X480 or 600X800. So the Dilemma is trying to decide
which is the best to use.

What I do and this may not work for all. But I figured the majority
of the Web Surfers out their are more inline with the 640 X 480 set
up. Their for I try to design all my sites to fit that criteria this
way I know that a large number of the surfing public will be able to view my page the way it was supposed to be viewed. I also do a lot of work in the 600 X 800 range it is becoming a widely excepted format like the 640 X 480 format.

Another thing I do that helps in this development stage is to
keep on my system the most current updated web Browsers I run both
IE and Netscape. The main reason for this is to assure browser
compatibility. I check out each page with both to make sure that the
page does what is expected in each browser.

This is only a few Ideas and suggestions I have. Each designer has
their own little tricks of the trade. Hope this has help to answer
a few of your questions.

Just thought I'd give you my input. A poll on some website said that the percentage of screen resolutions used by people were 800x600 and 1024x768 were each about 30%, 640x480 was about 20%, 10% was resolutions higher than 1024 and 10% was minority resolutions between 640 and 1024. No one seemed to use anything lower than 640.

I think you'll find it's a simple case of not being able to please all the people all the time.

It also probably depends on your target audience such as the business user or the home user.

I use a 19" monitor at a high res to work on but also have a 15" monitor at 800 x 600 to view the finished page before publishing.

I feel 800 x 600 is probably the safest res to work at as this should cover a majority of users.

But thats me!

Yup, 800x600 works for me. 640x480 is well tiny these days and fewer and fewer people use it. I try to keep things looking best at 800x600 and just about useable at 640x480. It's not even those res's anyway, it's way less with the browser buttons and taskbar for pc users taken into account...

I try never to get it more than 600 pixels across; works for me.

It's true.. I trend to start with a PSD file at the design stage at around 600 across. It depends on who the client thinks will be looking at the site.. and honestly it depends on the client too...

Hey guys, I have found a neat little utility that can re-size your browser. It works with both IE and Netscape and the resolutions it shows are, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and WebTV. And its free!!
