Do Frames have their place?

Popular opinion would seem to suggest that, generally speaking, frames suck. Is there still a place for them in the modern web site?

Obviously we use them here at the Toolbox, but it wouldn't be too hard to do away with them. And it would probably help us out on the search engines, as most of them choke on framed sites.

On the other hand, they can be useful for navigation and, done well, can enhance the look & feel of the site.

Anyone have any thoughts on the advantages/disadvantages of frames these days? Do you use frames on your site? Will we still see framed sites in 5 years' time?!

Hi,
Firstly, i would like to say a thankyou to matt, or whoever runs this site it is very nice.
Frames, mmm, toutchy subject.. Um, there good....no there bad....no there good, damm i cant choose!
Loading times good, looks, can be VERY nice, dodgy they can be, and the search engines, well you know.
In 10 years i think they will still have there place, but there should be loads of new stuff, like VRML, but i'll be dammed if in going to learn that with ease.
What do u guys think of VRML?

As you well know Matt, I use frames at ExeWeb. With the notable exception of Yahoo! (swines!) none of the major search engines have ignored me and I honestly believe that the framed layout aids swift and effective navigation of the site.

Thanks Jon for your kind comments, and welcome Steve - good to see you on the forums!

Reading around, I get the impression that a lot of search engines don't follow the FRAMESET tag and only read the HTML within the NOFRAMES tag.

Check out:

for a good guide on how to make framed sites work well with search engines.

Glad they work ok for you anyway Steve!
