In the latest ELATED Extra, I talk a little about design vs. IT in terms of decision-making. Have you any good stories about how a mouthy designer has ruined a website you've worked on? Or maybe as a designer, you're fed up with having to prove your case for every little change? Sound off below!

Well, design and IT should go in hand to hand..! I work at a place where they give lot of importance to design and less to IT(technical related)..

People these days are looking at the package cover.. not the gift inside the package..

I agree, theres a need to have suave UI.. but, it should not effect the hard-code to worse..

for eg: action-script and .net!! people want vector works on their website, which is actually meant for secure transactions...

Thats the place where.. things are getting worse!!

Interesting points desibird - thanks for posting. I agree that the two disciplines should go hand-in-hand.

Coming from a tech background myself, I used to view website design as of secondary importance compared to content, usability, navigation, and so on.

These days I see design as equally important - not just from the point of view of usability, but also because a good, professional design really improves a visitor's impression of a site. This in turn encourages them to explore the site further, as well as share the site and link to it - which in turn leads to more traffic. So a good (or bad) design can end up having a big impact on the site's bottom line.

The problems start when a site leans too far in one direction, and becomes either too design-led or too technology-led!

Cheers,
Matt

Totally guys I agree with you all. I do come from a Tech background too.

I do still work on IT but I upgrade myself to Web Designer now, and I cannot imaging working on Web Design without having computer Knowledge (software and hardware) and viceversa.

It open your mind to the next level.

I also agree with the points you guys have made above.

@simon: I guess it all boils down to the environment as you noted. Your categorizations really made me laugh.

@desibird: Both should go hand in hand, but as you've noted, these days people don't care much for the IT aspect. I was involved in a project a few years back where the client wasn't the least bit interested in the code but rather the design!!

@Mauco I agree with you, but in my opinion people that don't even get involved in coding, don't even care about that because they have never been involved in that important functionality.

I am not a coder, but I know how to modify and hack different languages like PHP, and JAVA. I do also give a lot of emphasis in the design a give to my clients, but I think website's functionality which in my view is the website's code, it is very essential too.

In general, I think both are essential, but as you should know everybody will have their own opinion.

But if anyone, it does not matter if it is a Tech or not, gets involved in both sides of the coin, they will realize how coding(functionality) and design are important to the final website's outcome.
