with:
1. cgi/perl (implying that there is ftp access)
2. preferably no ads, but if it has to have ads it should be a banner, not a popup (and preferably a banner that you can decide where you want to put it)

does anyone know of any? i used to use portland, but their free accounts only last for a month (i found out the hard way when it was deleted); then i used phatsites.co.uk but now they've completely disappeared. *sigh* it's so hard to find these nowadays.

The trouble is, the business model just doesn't hold up really. Online advertising just won't cut it.

I fear you may have to shell out, especially is you want CGI too.

http://www.nameroute.co.uk are pretty cheap and I think have CGI with that..

http://www.brinkster.com/ isn't bad. Though you can't use FTP unless you upgrade your account.

hmm. well thanks for the input guys. i've been thinking for awhile since free hosts with the features i want have disappeared since y2k...

http://www.pingu.co.uk/ looks pretty good...i don't quite understand how the pricing relates to the packages, it's kind of confusing. plus since i am a minor i have to bug my parents to pay for this and i pay them back in cash. i also found fairmount.nu, which looked really cheap, and both pingu and fairmount had sub-domain offers, which i'd be willing to accept since they are so cheap. fairmount was like $5, but right now (18:36 CST 1/23/03) their site is down and that's not a good sign...

i also have another question about paying webhosts. say that pingu limits your data transfer to 2gb. now that IS a lot, most likely i will never use this much, and they say that less than 1% of their clients do this, but if you do happen to try to exceed this limit, will your ftp server (for example) give you a message that says "you have exceeded your data transfer this month" and not let you upload anymore, or will it let it happen and then charge you?

They don't usually limit FTP uploads, they just limit the bandwidth used by people browsing your site.

The way they limit it varies - often the server will display a page to the visitor saying that the page cannot be displayed because the site owner has exceeded their monthly transfer limit.

A lot of hosting companies will simply charge you an excess bandwidth fee if you go over your limit.

I'd send off an email to the company you're interested in, and ask what their policy is on this.

Generally such a low cost host have very poor speeds and uptime records, right now I also cannot see these sites working. Try www.portland.co.uk - its free with no ads and AFAIK offers cgi scripting also.

Staying with good value hosts, I just got a msg from www.12eurodomains.com. I use them already for domain names, and the hosting package looks quite good too.

Try http://www.i6networks.com for free hosting, basic but fast.
Only problem is I cannot find out much about them.
http://iPowerweb.com is one of the worlds biggest and offers a great package especially at the present exchange rate with the dollar. 800megs.40gigs free domain name, tons of features -$8/month.
Also take a look at http://www.digital-crocus.com a cute little UK company offering 50megs and 5gigs of bandwidth for 15quid a year. Includes U/L domains, U/L subs. 5mysqls,1 email
FTP etc. And a lovely designed site with instructions in clear English AND I got an instant reply from them at 4.34am one morning! Oh and http://www.imageshack.com is a suberbly simple free image hoster for linking to auctions, your site or blog. No image management but simple upload and an instant URL that works.
