Do you hand-code your websites?

Just wondering how many people here hand-code their HTML and CSS in a plain old text editor, and how many use WYSIWYG editors like Dreamweaver/FrontPage?

Personally I nearly always hand-code, as I find the WYSIWYGs tend to wreck the formatting of the markup. (And produce *terrible* CSS, with about a million CSS classes!) Does anyone find them faster and more efficient than hand-coding?

I'm finding that due to a slightly slapdash coding style, I'm liking editors that auto-complete code for me, so essentially a text-editor with web-editing features. I currently use Coda:

I usually use Notepad, 'cos I'm too bone idle to come to grips with the likes of Microsoft Front Page.

Also, Notepad forces me to think about what I'm doing, so I get to learn more about CSS & HTML because of having to rectify all the mistakes I make.

(I might cheat occasionally though, and resort to WYSIWYG software if I get stuck!!!!!! Please don't tell anybody that, will you?)

Ah the Notepad route. The way of the true coder!

No loss regarding Front page though, frankly.

I use a combination of Dreamweaver to help with HTML and CSS code and Eclipse Platform with PHP IDE for PHP work.

I find the word-auto-complete feature really saves me time, especially Eclipse (which also lists relevant object methods and properties etc - this is really useful).

However, I don't rely on these. They save me time in doing the more boring, labour-intensive tasks, such as putting together a table in DW. I also make sure that the code is well-formed though, so it's actually the Code-view rather than Design-view I use most in DW.

It's all about what tools will help me make the most efficient and effective use of my time.

I think that's a fair point about DW. As a really nice text-based editor it's rather good. The design view i find mostly a distraction..

we build on content management systems, it is way easier. If we have to get in and edit the code we do only when it is a special project
