You may notice that we use the ASCII smiley as part of our branding here at ELATED (check out the logo at the top left of the screen). The version we use is a corruption of the original "proper" smiley which had a "nose" element too.
Anyway, it's worth mentioning that the smiley is now 25 years old, invented by on Scott E. Fahlman at Carnegie Mellon University to allow people to convey the idea that what they were writing was a joke.
