@itz_tim_y0: Thanks for your suggestions! I'll bear them in mind when I next work on improving the forum code.

The forums should keep you logged in for a set period (I think it's 30 days). Works for me anyway. Maybe you switched browsers or deleted/blocked cookies?

Hi again! Just to confirm that I hate to «point out» my finger to anyone's work. I only mentioned those things because I like this place. If I wouldn't care I wouldn't even be here at the forums talking to you.
I really hope that I am not misunderstood. Really! I love the whole «shabang»! All Elated is quite nice!

Hey Márcio,

Thanks for the feedback! I believe that even Vista's font rendering can be quite "bitty", and that Windows 7 is much smoother in this regard (not that I've seen it in either - I only run WinXP in a VM on my Mac!). Yes, we've used Typekit to render the main font (Museo Slab), although there's a bit of a discussion going on here about an alternative (Font Squirrel):

http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/4864/

Yeah, the menu is pure CSS (based on "son of suckerfish"), with a transparent PNG background and CSS3 rounded corners/drop shadows. Couldn't get it to work at all in IE7 unfortunately, so those poor souls that use IE6/7 just get a link to the Articles page instead!

Good point about the buttons. Maybe we'll do bold for the default button, and regular font for the secondary button.

Thanks again - great points!

Re: What do you think of our new site design? http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/4930/#post19116 From: mguerra79

Hi guys! I am back!

Matt, here comes my little review on the new Elated.

I LOVE IT ALL!!! REALLY!!! I was surfing around (do we still use that word?) (Ah! No, we use browsing, ok! Got it!!!) and enjoy the feel of almost everything, really. The images, the colors, the text, the buttons, almost everything. Ok, then, the least, that is the almost, is regarding, at least to me, in my PC, with Vista, Chrome, and is about the big Headers, like in this very same page where it says «Post a reply». It seems, and yet it doesn't seem that much right now, I noticed it in the first time, it seemed a bit, how can I say it, when we choose the type to be smooth, sharp, and it wasn't any, it was like if the type was «bitten», with teeth. Can't remember proper word. Despite now I don't feel that, or at least that much. So, for now it seems ok. I imagine that it might be some webkit stuff, right? That stuff to help us add some new type to our fonts in the page? Might be my feeling just, but, regarding type that is my only pointing finger.
Regarding the menu... Ouch, amazing. Is that all made with CSS? I love the feeling of them. There, to the whole menu, I would just try to set a bit higher the contrast against the banner itself, where you have pattern, to be even more recognizable, but even that seems very pleasant.
Since I am point fingers here, despite feeling bad for doing it, I must apologize for that, because the overall feeling is so good, I noticed, right now that I am writing, that you can indeed take a bit further the usability of the buttons in the message posting/site, if there are any others that I don't remember like this, to even add some feeling to the user. Both are orange, one cancels the message, the other one, a bit bigger, posts it. Why not go a step further and add some «do» and «don't» colors to the buttons? I mean, like a red to cancel the message, and greener tone to post it, so that we don't rely just on reading. I think that this I am talking about is usability, however I am also thinking about ergonomics and I can't remember any other words/terms. The best I can do is to relate to Jacob Nielsen, and I guess you understand me now, if not already.

That is all, and don't take it too hard, I don't mean to make anyone sad. Like I said, 99,9% is almost 100%, and I just left that 0,01 to the type, menu contrast and perhaps the buttons. I really love the overall look, indeed, from the bottom of my heart, ehehhe!

Cheers from Portugal

Márcio Guerra

P.s.- It is easier, however, to point out the finger, rather then to do it. You guys did, indeed, a AWESOME job here!!! AWESOME!!!

@Márcio: Looking forward to your feedback!

@Crispy: Sounds like the degree covers a lot of ground - great stuff. I've always been fascinated by TV production since my visits to Broadcasting House as a kid (my Dad used to work as a TV producer at the BBC).

I think there's a lot of mileage left in radio. I saw a blog post the other day that claimed TV "killed off" radio, while the internet is killing off TV. Nonsense! I love listening to radio, since you can do other stuff at the same time (such as cooking). I even manage to get Radio 4 on my iPhone here in Australia, thanks to a handy app called FStream. Not so easy to cook while watching TV or surfing the web.

@Matt: My degree is pleasantly flexible; in my first year I had compulsory modules covering multi-camera TV production, single-camera short film-making, live and pre-recorded radio production and interactive design (largely Flash) alongside my theory units. Then in year two I have been able to specialise in those which most appealed to take on more advanced projects using the same core skills.

So the answer to your question is probably "both"! Interestingly I didn't take the interactive design second year module as I have found a greater affinity with radio presentation and production. I do still try to keep my web design skills reasonably fresh, though - I'll have to launch myself onto the web properly within the next year or so if I am to find work, after all!

@Crispy: I nearly did a media degree, but ended up doing a much more dull computer science degree instead. Sounds interesting - does the course cover the internet a lot, or is it mostly traditional media?

Going a bit offtopic: Found this great old Canadian TV news report today (early 90s at a guess?) talking about this strange new phenomenon called "internet"...

@Simon: It's good to be back! You are of course right about the decade - it is more '50s. In my defence, that's a long while before I was around!

@Matt: Things have been going very well. I'm not actually in Brighton itself but it's my closest city when at home. I'm presently halfway through a University of Surrey degree in media and broadcasting, which confusingly sees me share my time between Sussex and a satellite campus in Hampshire.

@mauco: Thanks - that dropdown menu was a lot of work to get right (and even then I couldn't get it working properly in IE7). I'm glad you like it.

@Crispy: It's really good to hear from you - it's been a while! Thanks for your kind words on the redesign. The new look is mainly down to Simon's superb design skills.

I'm glad your forum login still works too - I completely rewrote the forums in PHP last year but ported all the old accounts across. What's more, since you're an old regular, you automatically get Silver status. Wahey!

How are things with you, and what are you up to these days? I see from your Facebook page you're living in Brighton - great spot, and it also happens to be where Simon lives.

Wow, you guys have once again surpassed yourselves!

The new look Elated is quite exceptional - clean but not clinical, and with a lovely '60s kitchenette feel to the whole shebang!

Keep up the excellent work. I'm a long time fan and often pop in to read your articles and keep up-to-date with the cutting (even bleeding?) edge of web design and development, if only as a keen onlooker.

Whilst I have your attention, might I add how pleasantly surprised I was to find my forum account was still active after all this time?

May your new look bring you many new successes.

What do you think of our new site design? http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/4930/#post19053 From: matt

Hi all,

We've just pushed the new www.elated.com site design live. The new design has the following features:

- New branding

- A cleaner, 2-column layout

- A nice drop-down menu for the articles

- Images for the news items on the homepage (once we've finished adding them!)

- You can browse older news items from the homepage (just click the "Older stuff" link at the bottom of the page)

- Nice big Share/Follow buttons at the bottom of most pages for, well, sharing and following!

- Various other minor tweaks and improvements

We'd love to know what you think of the new design. Let us know in this topic.

Hi all,

We've just added RSS feeds to the forums. This means you can keep up with the latest forum topics in your feed reader, without needing to check the forums all the time.

There are feeds for individual forums, as well as a combined feed containing posts for all forums.

To add a feed to your reader, use the RSS icons on the forums homepage:

http://www.elated.com/forums/

You can also click the RSS icon in your browser address bar, if available, when you are viewing a forum.

I hope you enjoy the feeds! Please post here if you encounter any problems.

Cheers,
Matt

We'll be launching the forums RSS feeds any day now. (Just need to do some icons!)

@mauco: I like your idea of tutorials that show how to design a site in Photoshop then convert to HTML/CSS. We've had quite a few requests for this type of tutorial actually.

BTW we do offer a customisation service for the PageKits, although it's not very well advertised I must admit

Hi Matt,

Please, I would like to see the following on elated.com :

GENERAL

* more free and paid templates. Concerning the paid templates, Elated should also offer a customisation service for clients who like the Elated templates, but do not have the time/skills to customise them.

* new stories on building websites. For the sake of those who know how to develop websites by manually coding HTML (but have little design skills), I think you should write more articles on how to design websites starting from a design and converting same into HTML.

* the idea of having a rss feed is also great.

* more articles and news stories related to building websites

* polls/surveys

Those are some of the things I would like to see on Elated. If more ideas come to mind, I'll be sure to come back and post them here.

Hi Matt,

Sounds like you have some great plans for elated this year

Being a newbie designer, I'd like to see more articles on the actual design process, and Photoshop always goes down well too (despite having used it for nearly 10 years, I still consider myself a beginner at photoshop).

I really like the idea of RSS feeds for the forums - should make it much easier to see what's new. I wouldn't mind an RSS feed for all forums though - so you only need to check one feed, but I guess many people would only be interested in a few areas.

I'd like to see some articles on the latest CSS stuff too - I feel my CSS knowledge might be somewhat dated these days.

Plus more pagekits - especially paid ones we can use in our web design projects for clients ...

Looking forward to seeing what you guys produce this year!

What would you like to see on elated.com? http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/4901/#post18893 From: matt

Dear visitors and forum members:

It's been a while since we asked for specific feedback on www.elated.com , but we feel that this is your site as much as ours, so we'd love to have your input on the direction the site takes.

GENERAL:

We have quite a lot planned for elated.com in 2010, including a brand new site design (yay!), lots more tutorials, more forum features, and new website templates (both free and paid).

But what would you like to see added to the site?

* More free web templates?
* More stock photos?
* More Photoshop actions?
* More articles?
* Polls/surveys?
* News stories related to building websites?

ARTICLES:

What types of articles would you like to read more of? Currently we have the following topics in the pipeline:

* PHP
* Photoshop
* jQuery
* HTML
* Using FTP apps

Are there any particular articles in these topics that you'd like to see? Or do you have any suggestions for new article topics?

FORUMS:

We also want to build our community on the forums and get more of you involved with posting topics and replying to questions. With this in mind, we're planning to add more features to the forums in the current weeks, such as RSS feeds for each forum. If you have any other ideas for how to improve the forums, please let us know!

Please post your suggestions here, or send them directly to Matt at http://www.elated.com/contact/ .

Thanks!
Matt

A software license sets out the conditions under which a user may use, modify, or distribute the software. For example, most open source licenses allow the user to change the software and give away copies to other people, while most proprietary licenses forbid such actions.

For more details see:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_license

Hope that helps!

Thanks for your suggestion. I think there are 2 things to clarify here:

1. The PHP engine is open source, but that doesn't mean that PHP scripts also have to be open source. You can use whatever license you like for your PHP scripts.

2. By "accessible to visitors", I mean that JavaScript code is always visible (just "view source" in your browser), whereas code that runs on the server is not visible/downloadable (unless you choose to explicitly put a zip file of the code on your site for people to download). This is independent of the license used. For example, JavaScript can have a non-open-source license but still be "viewable" to visitors. Similarly, just because a PHP script happens to have an open source license doesn't mean that the script is automatically downloadable from the site that uses it.

Maybe in the article I need to clarify the difference between the PHP engine, and PHP scripts.

Did that make sense?! I have a cold today and my head is fuzzy.

Cheers,
Matt

PHP Tutorial Update http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/4778/#post18270 From: knystrom19

Hey, I'm new to ELATED, but love the newsletter.

I was reading through the PHP tutorial here: http://www.elated.com/articles/what-is-php/
and came across something that confused me.

If PHP is server side code, and can't be accessed by outside users, then why is the engine open source if it also resides on the web servers? Wouldn't this mean that all the PHP on web servers is essentially open source?

Perhaps some clarification in those paragraphs?

Thanks,

- K

There should be an introductions section in this forum which contains information about the moderators and owner of this forum.

Sorry - it took a bit longer than a week!

Anyway, I've replaced those animated buttons with a couple of static graphics:

Much less distracting. Hope you like 'em

Thanks,

Hi.

Love your site.
I was about to link to it using your code, but I feel your animated buttons are too distracting.
Any chance we could have a non-animated button?

Cheers.

Re: Thanks guys, but... http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/4554/#post17748 From: simon

I'd second that I think. As Matt says, we haven't had much call from clients for all-flash or flash-based websites. This means we're not working with Flash very much, and hence Flash PageKits aren't really on the radar right now.

There are also issues with Flash that make it harder for a user to modify than a normal PageKit, which lessens the appeal somewhat.

That said, we do look to provide users with what they want, so if you could give us any ideas as to how you'd like to see this implemented, we're all ears!

Thanks for your feedback mauco, and the suggestion. We don't tend to do much Flash-based design ourselves, which is probably why we haven't done any Flash PageKits so far! It's certainly something we'll bear in mind for the future though.

All the best,
Matt

Hi Simon and Matt,

Thanks guys for your wonderful and very helpful site. This year, I particularly enjoyed the Daily Tips on the site and your Newsletter. Keep it up!

Whilst your existing Pagekits are great, I'm hoping you guys can give us some Flash based works in the coming year.

Wishing you greater success in the 2006 calender year.

Cheers

Hi Kate,

You may not be aware that the members of the forums provide a lot of very valuable free help to lots of people out there on the web.

As a moderator of one of the forums, I know just how much time this can take up, so you need to be patient! You can't expect to get an answer to your questions immediately.

The forums work as a give and take thing - you ask for help when you need it, and you give help when you can. The only thing that anyone gets back when they help you is the satisfaction that they've been able to help someone, and the thanks that you post back.

The tutorials on this site are also given as free help for people. If you have a problem with a tutorial you ask for help on the forums, or you try and find out the answer for yourself on the web. If you ask nicely, and someone has the time to help you, then you might get some help, but help is not promised, and it's really up to you to ask in the nicest possible way, as well as being patient in waiting for a reply.
