@ibo765: Glad you got it working. You probably don't want to mess about too much with jQM's button/icon sizes though, as it may have knock-on effects with other page elements.

Don't forget you can also create a 36x36 icon for HD displays, which allows you to have more detail.

From a design perspective, it's also worth pointing out that an icon designed at 128x128 won't necessarily be that clear at 16x16! Icon designers usually design alternative icon sets at various different sizes.

Cheers,
Matt

This has definitely been a learning experience. Since the last post, I have picked up some information from the web that has answered some questions. I have learned how to remove the semi-transparent black/grey circle for the button icon. This allows for more colorful icons to be seen.

Now I need to figure out how to make the button size larger to display more interesting icons. 18x18 pixel dimension is somewhat limiting..

Re: anybody know anything about icon sets? http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/1792/#post22148 From: ibo765

I realized that the file path had one too many backslashes...It was corrected: .ui-icon-foodmenu { background-image: url(images/food.png); }

I took and existing .PNG from http://www.iconfinder.com/ and sized it down to 18 x 18 to use on my button. Since it already has a transparency layer, I took no further action. However the image is not showing properly on the button using the code from the book.

Here is the icon I am attempting to display:
http://www.iconfinder.com/icondetails/49741/128/food_knife_icon

I have discovered that this is not much information on the web of on creating custom icons for Jquery Mobile though I have seen some stunning examples in the Jquery Mobile site.

Can anyone point to where I can find some good information on that topic?

To Matt Doyle:

I believe I have followed the information on page 49-51 of your book on building my own custom Icon but it is still not displaying.

So what I did was use a known working custom icon that is displaying from another jquery mobile application and it does not display either.

All I get is a grey dot where the image should be on the button.

So, there is a problem with the code somewhere...

Code:
--------------------
CSS:
.ui-icon-foodmenu { background-image: url(/images/food.png); }

<a href="index.html" data-role="button" data-icon="foodmenu">Menu</a>
--------------------

@niintek: You can position a layer precisely by selecting it in the Layers palette, then choosing Edit > Free Transform and entering values in the X and Y boxes in the toolbar at the top.

Sorry for my the late reaction! But Matt, i think that this works just as good as the way i'm used too in illustrator. As you might now, in illustrator you can select objects and give them both x and y values for positioning.

So is there a way too align objects within photoshop but without using a guide you mentioned above? I know you can open up the info window, but here you cannot specify any values.

Ciao,

@niintek: Do you mean a ruler or a guide? For a guide, choose View > New Guide and type the position.

I don't think it's possible with rulers, at least on CS3 (which is what I'm using).

Simon,
I'm a big fan of Xara, but I do understand your reservations. I don't have nearly the experience that you do, but I do remember using something called Aldus Freehand 3.1 in the mid to late 90's (who owns that now?). I made maps with it at the time and thought it was a great tool (for its day). I got back into graphics about 5 years ago, this time mostly for website stuff and happened onto Xara 3 at the time. I fell in love with its relative simplicity. I've tried the CS4 suite I'd take Xara over Illustrator in a heart-beat. I do use Photoshop because the selection tools do things that no other program can. Still over-all I think the Adobe line is vastly over-rated. Back to Xara, I agree with your observations about the current interface and marketing. It seems to me that they are becoming a "Jack of All Trades" type of product, when I wish that they would just put their resources into being a great vector graphics program.

Update: @michaelbuddy on twitter suggests we may have an overly maccy bias, and that we should big up Xara Designer Pro 7 (http://www.xara.com/us/products/designer/).

Xara is a venerable app. I remember using it in the mid-90s to illustrate a children's book a friend was working on, and it was an absolute pleasure at the time. Then owned by Corel, it's now been spun off into a separate company.

There's a couple of things that trouble me looking at it now though:

1) That interface. It's just.. nasty. If I'm sitting in front of something all day, I do not want it to be that. Sorry. I know this is subjective, but still.

2) It's not marketed as a pro app, which suggests that the developers don't have the confidence in the product to compete in the pro marketplace. The site feels prosumer at best.

The thing is, Xara might be brilliant under the hood, but with the interface and marketing acting as a ball and chain around its foot, it's never going to be a pro tool.

Neither is this a Mac/PC thing. For a really, really brilliant pro design tool I'd switch platforms I think. It's about the work after all. I'm afraid this doesn't even make me want to download a demo onto the office Windows box

On the vector anti-aliasing topic:

This drove me nuts for awhile, too. After some rather exhaustive searching I've found that there are several ways to address this:

1. Make sure you are at 100% zoom (no more, no less) when drawing, moving, or transforming a vector shape. Not always convenient, especially for smaller shapes.

2. Use the "snap to pixels" method that Matt posted above. Be aware that you will still get anti-aliasing of you try to transform the shape at anything other than 100% zoom, though. But, with the snap to pixels option turned on you can re size the shape without anti-aliasing it by using the white arrow tool to select and drag points.

3. Turn on the grid (cmd/ctrl+' or view>show>grid) and select "snap to grid" from the view>snap to> menu. Setting the grid to 1 pixel increments will give the finest control using this method. (under preferences>grids, guides & slices...) I like setting it to grid line every 10 pixels and 10 subdivisions, but there are a lot of combinations that will get the same result.

@RussellBishop We don't have ANY mobile-optimised versions of the website. That's clearly stated in the article, and is kind of the point - we're just using Elated as an example of how to approach it. This is not a "how to do it" article. More of a "how to approach the IA and the design" one.

If we were to do it, we'd certainly look at a responsive version, which if possible, seems to me to be the way to go. I don't know if there's any ideology behind it though.

@bamme. Russel's approach seems like a good one to me,

@mauco Thanks for the feedback!

It's actually very easy, and very reliable.

My preferred method is to @import a new stylesheet called @queries.css (I like to keep them separate) and in there I have all of my media queries for different max-widths.

"What techniques did you use to serve your mobile-optimized version of the website (actually, iPhone-optimized) to the relevant users?" -- i second this question with the addition of "..and what do people propose is the BEST way?"

Just that ive read up on using the same url to serve mobile content is the best way according to Google for SEO.

I've looked at ways to include and serve a separate css file and it doesnt seem very easy or reliable (http://www.alistapart.com/articles/return-of-the-mobile-stylesheet)

So i was looking to try to find how to best redirect people using a server side technique.

What techniques did you use to serve your mobile-optimized version of the website (actually, iPhone-optimized) to the relevant users?

I have used boxed art before and I loved it. It has lots of great templates. I would love to get a new membership from this contest.

I would use it for my dog blog. My first image would be an image like this...

The first image I will download is this image of little pills coming out of a roll of dollar notes: http://cutcaster.com/photo/100772460-Medicine-cost/#S3552553

It would be perfect for illustrating our Issue Briefs that deal with the cost of medical devices/technology.

Thanks, Elated folk! I've really enjoyed your newsletters over the years.

My pic would be this Lioness. Looking straight into the eyes of a full grown wild lion is one of the scariest things I have ever encountered. I think that's where the saying comes from: "If looks can kill".
